Historic Lake Garda Steamship “Italia” Arrives at Riva Tomorrow

The steamboat on which Ciampi will arrive at Riva tomorrow evening (disembarkation between 7:00 PM and 7:15 PM) is an authentic old glory of Lake Garda navigation.

The boat “Italia” was built back in 1902 by the shipyards in Peschiera, based on a design by a Swiss engineer.

It was a steamship, with two large paddles on the sides. The paddles – which, along with the Art Nouveau design of the structures, represent the most visually appealing aspect of the motor vessel – still exist today, but since 1949 they have been powered by two powerful Diesel engines.

The history and renovation of the ship

During World War II (in the First World War, it had the honor of bringing Italian officers to Trentino), Italia was sunk in a bombing off the coast of Sirmione.

Refloated a few years later, it was entirely renovated, while preserving its size and equipment features.

Another restoration took place in 1999, when Navigarda transformed it into the elegant cruise ship it is today: 57 meters long, with a capacity of 500 tourists, a crew of 5, plus auxiliary staff for onboard services.

Tomorrow’s trip

Tomorrow the boat will depart from the port of Limone around 6:30 PM.

The route to Riva will be wider than usual to allow Ciampi to enjoy the lake’s beauties more fully.
