The first hydrogen train in Italy is expected to enter service in the Lombardy region, with commercial operations set to begin by the first half of 2026. The train, part of an order for 14 units financed by the region, arrived on January 23rd and is currently undergoing testing and trials. During the project presentation on February 13th, several regional and national authorities were present, including President Attilio Fontana and Transport Councillor Franco Lucente. This train represents a significant step towards transport sustainability, as it will operate on the non-electrified Brescia-Iseo-Edolo line as part of the H2iseO project, which aims to develop a hydrogen supply chain in the area.

The establishment of a depot and maintenance facility for hydrogen trains in Rovato marks an important innovation for Lombardy, contributing to the decarbonization of local public transport. With significant investments in modernizing the railway fleet and infrastructure dedicated to hydrogen, the region is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable mobility. The new technologies introduced will not only enhance the efficiency of rail transport but also promote economic development related to clean energy, creating new job opportunities in the field of transport sustainability.
