A new center, the Operational Lakes Department of the Coast Guard, was inaugurated in Milano in the presence of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Senator Matteo Salvini. This facility will coordinate navigation safety activities on Lake Garda, Lake Maggiore, and Lake Como. The event marks the 160th anniversary of the Port Authorities – Coast Guard and takes place at the Interregional Office for Public Works located at Piazzale Morandi 1. The Department will be responsible for managing search and rescue operations, ensuring safety for tourists and workers who frequent these important water bodies.
The new Department is equipped with a state-of-the-art operations room, ready to communicate directly with rescue vessels operating on the lakes. Currently, around 100 Coast Guard personnel are deployed, supported by 16 specialized naval units active 24 hours a day. Throughout the current year, numerous rescue operations have already been coordinated, highlighting the importance of the Coast Guard’s presence in ensuring navigation safety in these waters. With the launch of the “Safe Lakes” operation, activities will continue intensively throughout the summer season.
