Independent cinema and disability: the film Sunday in Rome
The new documentary film “Sunday” by Giulio Tonincelli, an independent director from Brescia, had its world premiere on October 18, 2025, at 12:00 PM at the Auditorium Conciliazione in Rome. The work, produced by Moonwalk with the support of MessUp, is part of the Alice nella Città festival, which runs from October 15 to 26, 2025. The film tells the story of Ayoo Sunday, a fourteen-year-old girl with both physical and mental disabilities, living in a rural area of northern Uganda, where local traditions intertwine with daily challenges. Through a crowdfunding campaign and innovative cinematic language, Tonincelli offers a profound insight into how disability is perceived and addressed in complex contexts. “Sunday,” with a runtime of just 14 minutes, explores the life of the protagonist as she undertakes the difficult journey to collect water and access support facilities. The soundtrack enhances the visual experience with local rhythms and radio programs dedicated to the inclusion of people with disabilities. With this work, Tonincelli aims to challenge the conventions of traditional cinema and promote an authentic narrative about human resilience in adverse situations. Italian Version
