Italian Chefs and Enthusiasts Rally to Save Fiorentina Steaks Before Ban
Italians, a people of saints, poets, and navigators: a common saying that says a lot about the qualities and imagination of the tricolor nation. These characteristics have allowed Italians throughout history to overcome moments when despair seemed to prevail. These days, the fate of a fundamental Italian culinary institution is at serious risk: the Fiorentina steak, which as the dictionary states, is a tasty cut of meat taken from between the ribs or dorsal vertebrae. The events related to the so-called mad cow disease have led to a precautionary measure that bans the sale and use of Fiorentina after March 31. A heavy measure that will effectively remove this exquisite delicacy from our tables.
To lighten the mood about the event, celebrating together and wishing everyone that this prohibition is short-lived, the Peschiera branch of the Aeronautical Association has conceived a peculiar initiative called: «W la Fiorentina». What might seem, at first glance, like a football-inspired exclamation, is actually a fun evening dedicated to good Italian cuisine and entertainment. The goal: to enjoy a hearty Fiorentina the day before the circular banning its consumption takes effect.
Interventions and initiatives against the ban
The same Silvio Garattini, director of the Istituto di Ricerca Mario Negri, in an interview published a few days ago in a well-known national weekly, confirms that the removal of the bone-in steak is merely a highly precautionary measure. The prion, the agent considered responsible for Bse symptoms, has never been definitively found in the meat.
«We all love good Italian cuisine», exclaims Enzo Monico, president of the aviators, «for this reason we decided to celebrate with a nice Fiorentina meal, hoping this farewell will only be a brief goodbye». The evening has been scheduled for Friday, March 30, at the restaurant «Al Fiore» in Peschiera del Garda.
To metaphorically wish a long life to the Italian steak, the aviators of Arilicenze have set up an email address: wlafiorentina@yahoo.it where everyone is invited to send an email containing a joke, a comment, or a rhyme about mad cow disease. The most amusing creations will be printed on parchment with sealing wax and will be given away during the evening as a memory of the jovial gathering.
The collection of electronic comments will then be sent free of charge to all those who have kindly emailed their humorous opinion. For reservations to the event, by no later than March 25, contact: Eliseo Cussolotto 045.640.0376; Luigi Marchi 045.755.3086; Giordano Rocca 045.755.2843.
