Italy Faces Floods and Landslides Amid Emergency Response Efforts
MILAN – The rain has stopped. Despite forecasts predicting a return from tonight through Tuesday, the first evacuations have begun.
Emergency situations and interventions in the Garda locations
BRESCIA – At 11 p.m. last night in Limone sul Garda, on the western side of the lake, a landslide from a front approximately one hundred meters long invaded the SS 45 bis highway, which will remain closed today. Authorities alerted include Carabinieri, Civil Protection, and Garda Volunteers.
The fire brigade is also on the scene: there are concerns that vehicles may be trapped beneath over 500 cubic meters of fallen debris. Meanwhile, the 1,000 residents of Pisogne have returned home. The SS 42 has reopened. The ski facilities in Valcamonica are operational.
There are no issues reaching Passo del Tonale. Flooding reported in Desenzano and Sirmione.
Situations in the provinces of Sondrio and Como
SONDRIO – In Dubino, where a woman died the day before yesterday, about 1,000 people have returned home. Another 500 remain outside.
In Berbenno, many families have returned to their apartments, as well as in Aprica (55) and Cosio Valtellina (370). However, yesterday morning, a landslide occurred at the entrance of Sondrio. The road to Santa Caterina has reopened.
There are no issues reaching the ski resorts in Livigno, Chiesa Valmalenco-Palù, and Madesimo, which are already operational. The Aprica road is an exception.
COMO – In the city, some boulders have struck and injured a 43-year-old man. The lake is still at flood levels. Although the stadium is surrounded by water, there are no obstacles for the Como-Modena match.
The Cermenate overpass and the SS 639 remain closed. The Lariana state road is functioning. In Bregnano, 65 people have returned home.
Interventions and situations in the provinces of Lecco and Bergamo
LECCO – In Lecchese, yesterday afternoon, the SS 36 highway from Lecco to Colico was closed due to water infiltration making the tunnels dangerous. A woman was injured in an accident inside the Corenno tunnel, between Dervio and Dorio.
Yesterday in Dorio, a landslide prompted the evacuation of 11 families.
BERGAMO – A landslide on the municipal road in Lizzola isolated 350 residents for several hours. In Valcanale, a likely landslide threatens 34 people who are already out of their homes.
Flooding occurred in Lovere due to the overflow of Lake Iseo: water reached the former SS Tonale and Endine Gaiano.
Situations in the provinces of Mantua and Cremona
MANTUA – Twenty people were evacuated between Quistello and San Benedetto Po, threatened by the rising waters of the Secchia River. The Po and Mincio rivers are under observation.
CREMONA – The Oglio River continues to rise in Robecco d’Oglio. The Adda River has flooded the floodplain areas.
Interventions in Pavia and Varese
PAVIA – In Oltrepò, flooding of irrigation ditches led to the closure of provincial road 33 in Torrazza Coste. Provincial road 461 has reopened with alternating one-way traffic.
VARESE – Lake Maggiore is gradually receding. Small landslides continue without consequences.
