Italy’s Garda Water Management Sparks Calls for Leadership Change

Chincarini steps into the field, this time without mincing words, to demand the head of the Magistrato alle acque of Mantova. In a question addressed to the ministers of Public Works, Justice and Grace, Interior, and Environment, Deputy and Mayor Umberto Chincarini requests the removal of the head of the Mantova Operational Unit of the Magistrato alle acque. “I call on the government to act concretely and immediately to prevent the stubbornness of the person in charge from causing new, incalculable damage to the Garda community,” explains Umberto Chincarini verbatim, who then urges the ministers to “remove the head of the Mantova Unit.”

Prospects on the appointment of the new manager

In his place, the representative of Lega Nord would favor appointing the manager of the Verona Operational Unit. “Engineer Michele Pezzetta,” writes the mayor of Peschiera without hesitation in naming names, “is considered reliable and professionally suitable by the lake mayors.” His appointment, therefore, “would be an important signal from the government in understanding the needs of residents around Garda, local administrations, tourists, and passionate supporters of the preservation of the largest and most beautiful of Europe’s lakes.”

The cause of the controversy

The trigger for the latest stance by the Arilicense deputy was the decision by the Mantova Operational Unit to impose a discharge of Garda waters into the Mincio at only 30 cubic meters per second, instead of 77 cubic meters per second as indicated by the Verona Unit, concerned about the lake’s rising levels. A decision by the Mantova Unit, taken with the following reason: “For urgent maintenance work on the channel networks in preparation for the irrigation season.”
