Next Thursday, the Court of Cassation in Rome will address the final act of the trial concerning the deaths of Greta Nedrotti and Umberto Garzarella, who tragically lost their lives in the Gulf of Salò almost four years ago. The two young people were struck by a speedboat operated by German tourists while they were on a small wooden boat. The incident occurred between June 19 and 20, 2021, when the powerful Riva collided with the boys’ boat, which was stationary offshore after watching the Mille Miglia. Local communities continue to demand justice for Greta and Umberto, keeping the memory of the tragedy alive.
The day of the verdict coincides with the birthday of the owner of the speedboat involved in the incident. The driver, Patrick Kassen, was initially sentenced to 4 years and 6 months for nautical homicide, a sentence upheld on appeal, while Christian Teissman received a sentence of 2 years and 11 months. The law on nautical homicide, introduced in September 2023, has equated the penalties for this crime to those for road homicides, responding to the demands of the families and the local community who believe the sentences imposed on the defendants are insufficient given the severity of the incident.
