Lake Garda Water Levels Spark Urgent Flood Prevention Measures

Although it is not yet entirely true that “Lake Garda submerges the cheerful coastal towns and no one does anything,” as stated in their parliamentary inquiry, the provincial councilors of Forza Italia Mauro Delladio, Giacomo Santini, Maurizio Perego, and Gianni Cominotti have requested the president Dellai to urgently and in writing clarify: “1. what urgent measures he intends to adopt, or has already adopted, to monitor the water level of Lake Garda in order to prevent possible floods and inundations of the seaside villages; 2. what measures have been taken in agreement with the Authority of Basin of the provinces of Verona and Brescia to plan a potential opening of the sluice gates on Lake Garda to prevent floods and overflows of Lake Garda.”

Water situation and interventions

They report that “following the heavy rains of recent weeks and the equally copious ones of these days, the level of Lake Garda has risen significantly, causing the flooding of many cellars in Torbole sul Garda and beyond; the rise in the lake’s water level is also caused by the lack of opening of the Sluice on the Mincio and other drainage channels located in the neighboring provinces (Verona and Brescia).”
