Lake pollution in Desenzano: the alert from WWF Basso Garda
Recently, an alarm was raised in Desenzano del Garda regarding the presence of foul-smelling blocks of grease and organic waste on the beaches. The WWF Basso Garda reported that the polluting material, composed of chemicals such as detergents and soaps, along with organic waste like hair and human feces, originates from the local sewage system. Volunteers from the organization conducted checks on August 29 after a report from a citizen, confirming the severity of the situation with clusters of pollution along public beaches and in the reeds.
The Local Police and Arpa technicians intervened to assess the polluting material, highlighting that thousands of pieces can be found along the shores from Lonato to Rivoltella. The WWF emphasized the urgent need for structural interventions to improve the sewage situation around the lake, warning that such conditions seriously threaten the local ecosystem. While the affected beaches have been cleaned, the question of the future sustainability of the lake’s waters remains open.
