In Toscolano, lake trout ascend the stream to spawn, a phenomenon that is increasingly delayed due to the elevated water temperatures of the lake. Traditionally, the migration of these fish occurs from late October to mid-February, but this year it has only just begun a few days ago. The specimens, sometimes of considerable size, undertake a challenging journey to reach their spawning grounds, where the eggs hatch after about 45 days, also influenced by temperature.
According to Paolo Marai from the Toscomadernese association La Fario, each female lake trout lays approximately 1,500 eggs per kilogram of weight. To protect this delicate natural process, Marai urges fishermen and hikers to be vigilant and avoid stepping on the areas of the river where the eggs have been laid in the gravel. Safeguarding these stretches is essential to ensure the continuation of fish reproduction in the Toscolano stream.
