Landslide Delays Road Opening Near Limone, Traffic Changes Implemented
The great illusion lasted only a short while. It was just enough time to realize that the danger hadn’t entirely abated and to adjust accordingly. La Gardesana experienced a decidedly unusual Wednesday. Initially open, then immediately closed in the afternoon of yesterday at Nanzel, south of Limone.
Events and decisions regarding traffic management
As usual, it was all due to bad weather. The first to change course were the vehicles that had reached the town of Altogardesana shortly after 5 p.m. They noticed that dirt and stones were «caressing» some vehicle bodies, and so, on their way back, they didn’t even wait for the road closure by the security service, which then occurred as expected.
They chose the longer route through Voltino di Tremosine: several extra kilometers to make the loop, but prudence rightly advised extending the journey. The landslide area is not safe, and the recent precipitation has made the situation worrisome.
State of the landslide and interventions
There is loosened soil at higher elevation, with the «spider» — continuously working — moving the terrain. For this reason, a sufficient level of stabilization on the cliff face has not yet been reached, with all the resulting problems.
Meanwhile, today a geologist from Rome is expected to visit: he will re-examine the situation after the inspection carried out a couple of weeks ago. At Limone, a climate of waiting persists, with promises yet to be confirmed (perhaps by June the road between the town and Riva will reopen: for a few hours a day, if safety can be assured) and certainties only on paper.
Scheduled works and openings
In fact, the works at Nanzel are scheduled to be completed (according to the ordinance of ANAS) by Holy Saturday. However, there is a feeling that the reopening may occur earlier. Always avoiding surprises that no one desires.
The ferry service has also been reinforced, with eight additional trips per day. Some, however, complain that a morning ferry departs from Limone at 7 a.m. (the road to the town opens a quarter of an hour later, at 7:15 a.m.), while a ferry arrives at Limone at 8:10 a.m., and the road closes at 8:15 a.m., leaving limited chances for passage.
