Lazise Fisherman Rainin Perinelli Dies, Family Remembered

Condolences for the death of Alberto Bertasi, whom we previously mentioned in recent days, and of Rainieri Perinelli, known as Rainin, whose funeral will take place this morning at 10 a.m., with a gathering at Porta San Zeno. He was the nephew of Elisa Perinelli, the centenarian who reached the hundred-year mark last August.

Biography of Rainin and the Perinelli family

Rainin bore the name of Elisa’s father, as he was the first grandson born into the Perinelli family, and grandfather Rainieri wished for his name to be renewed with the first grandson born in Lazise. Rainin was the oldest of four brothers, all fishermen like him, always: Luciano (recently deceased), Giancarlo, and Bertino.

Certainly the most important and numerous family in Lazise dedicated throughout their lives to fishing. A job typical of the lake, and which has always provided modest income for the families engaged in it. Today, very few professional fishermen remain in Lazise.

The current fishermen and Rainin’s life

The list of fishermen can be counted on one hand: Giuseppe Perinelli, son of the patriarch Amelio, Giancarlo, and Bertino Perinelli, Gino Barato, and Giuseppe Campagnari. Rainin loved his work, the lake, his boat, which was moored in the harbor, and his rè (fishing nets).

Until recently, he would go in the late summer and autumn evenings to «metar i rè» (to set the nets in the water), then haul them up at dawn and sell the catch to the many restaurants in the area. Countless sleepless nights for his wife Anna, who waited near the window during cold winter evenings, hoping for Rainin’s return and his successful fishing.

The family and Rainin’s activity

With the modest income from fishing, he managed to raise five children: four daughters and one son, Tiziano. The only one, along with Aldina, to venture into a business close to the fishing world, marketing lake fish at markets in nearby towns.
