Lazise Population Decline and Immigration Trends in Local Demographics
The demographic situation and immigration in Lazise
The population of Lazise, like that of other lakeside municipalities, is in continuous decline. Births, in particular, do not offset deaths, which have been significantly higher—by a wide margin—especially over the past decade, than the number of new births.
“We can no longer replace our… spare parts,” laments an elderly local fisherman. “Something that used to happen in the 50s and 60s.” It is undeniable that the growth of the local population, by the statistics, increases each year, but only due to immigration.
Most of the immigration comes from non-EU foreigners who tend to settle regularly in our areas, which are rich in well-being and tranquility.
Birth management and official ceremonies
Returning briefly to births, there is a notable development in the administrative handling of these events, which today have become “a rarity” in the social and family fabric of Lazise’s people.
When a baby is born, even the parish priest is moved and publicly announces the news with a festive chime of the parish church bells.
The mayor did not want to be outdone. He took the initiative and immediately wrote a letter to congratulate the family of the new citizen of Lazise, accompanied by messages from the entire administration.
But he did not stop there. He issued a “directive” to the civil status and registry office official to display the event on a new public notice board, differentiating between girls and boys, with separate cards and bows.
This is certainly a new way of welcoming new life and citizens in Lazise, which makes the civic administration proud and also enhances the event among Lazise families, who are often focused—especially during the summer months—on intense productive activity and are often distracted or inattentive to everyday life developments, including those of neighbors or friends next door.
