Lega’s School Cross Demand Sparks Official Response in Brescia

The demand from the Lega di Desenzano to verify the presence of the crucifix in school classrooms has not gone unnoticed.

In response, the Provveditore agli studi di Brescia replied to the letter sent by Rino Polloni, a municipal councilor of Desenzano, assuring that the crucifix is present throughout the city’s schools.

The provincial councilor for public education, Mauro Parolini, instead responded that the issue raised warrants attention and assured that he will contact the Provveditore to ensure that the measures prescribed by the regulations are implemented in all schools.

Regulations and legal interpretations

The regulation referenced by the Lega is contained in Article 118 of the decree 965 from the distant 1924, which states that the presence of the crucifix is mandatory in school classrooms.

And according to the opinion of the Consiglio di Stato, this provision cannot be considered implicitly abrogated by the new concordat regulation regarding the teaching of Catholic religion.

The Council of State argues that, aside from its significance for believers, the Cross symbolizes the cornerstone of Christian civilization and culture in its historical root as a universal value.
