Lido Wreck Appeal: Bassetti Challenges Order to Salvage Tenace

Enzo Bassetti, president of the Comitato Manifestazioni Rivane, announces that he has appointed lawyer Claudio Malfer to file an appeal with the Tar against the order issued last April 6 by the Servizio Comunicazioni e Trasporti of the Province.

The contested order is the rather forceful directive to clear the Gulf of Lido of the wreck of the now-famous pontoon Tenace, which has been lying at a depth of 30 meters since it was dragged offshore by a Navigarda boat upon the request of another provincial office.

(Previously, it was submerged almost at water level, right in front of the pier just north of the Punta Lido Gelateria).

Motivations for the appeal and economic risks

The need to appeal to the Tar— initially to obtain a «suspension» of the order and later, possibly, to win the case on the merits — was driven by the very harsh terms of the Servizio Trasporti, which threatens to carry out the salvage of the Tenace itself and bill the operation to the Comitato Manifestazioni.

Since such an operation would be prohibitively expensive, risking to endanger the Committee’s activity for years, Bassetti felt compelled to act quickly, while still maintaining—apparently—hope that the issue of the Tenace can be resolved «politically» (meaning leaving it where it is: a bulky but not the only wreck sunk in the vastness of Garda).

Possible developments

The «suspension» granted by the Tar is thus a first milestone. The next could be a ruling stating that the «cadaver» does not cause any inconvenience.
