Lions Club Arco Riva Supports Restoration of 15th-Century S. Antonio Abate Church

The Lions Club Arco Riva has taken to heart the issue of the church of S. Antonio Abate in Chiarano.

In the sense that it has included its efforts for the enhancement and restoration of what is described as a “jewel” of the 15th century that needs saving in its service projects.

The first step was the publication of a leaflet about the Romarzollo small church, with text by Prof. Turrini and beautiful images.

Future initiatives and activities

This informational moment should be followed by a day of meeting in Chiarano, so it is not ruled out that a committee will be established to raise funds and collaborate with public entities to proceed with the restoration of the church located in the upper part of the town of Chiarano, climbing a maze of alleys and porticoes.

Inside, there are remarkable historical and artistic testimonies of value.

Testimonies and artistic elements

For example, the fresco on the southern facade, definitely from the 15th century, or the wooden altar that holds a painting of interest: it depicts Pope Fabian and Saint Augustine, Bishop of Hippo.

The wooden statue of Sant’Antonio Abate with a piglet at his feet occupies the central position.

On the north side, there is an inscription within a scroll that recalls some bequests to the church and to the vicinia by local benefactors.

On the opposite side, instead, there is a memorial of restoration works carried out by Austrian soldiers in 1917.

It is already time to restore that ancient church.
