Local Council Approves 2001 Budget Amid Opposition Protest
Vote on the 2001 Budget Forecast
Approved solely by the votes of the majority, the 2001 budget forecast. The opposition chose to abstain in protest against the lack of involvement of the group on the preliminary project for the renovation of Piazza Statuto and Corso Garibaldi.
In their statement, the minority expressed their regret and “the conviction of being once again excluded from fair discussion and debate on a project, already presented to the representatives of the Hotel and Merchant Association, which involves the entire community”.
Criticism of the proposal method for the project
“Perhaps the majority feels capable of producing designs whenever one of its distinguished members has an excess of genius, considering that the costs are just trifles compared to the expenses for realizing the work.” “There is no intention of closing off to the opposition,” replied Mayor Giuseppe Lombardi.
“It is solely a matter of timing, considering that the preliminary project was delivered to the Municipality only on February 27. I intended to present it to the minority already on Thursday, but in the preparatory meeting for the Council, there was only one representative from the opposition. On the same afternoon, we presented it to the local economic categories to demonstrate that we do not want to keep it hidden from anyone.” The item was temporarily suspended from the agenda to illustrate the project.
