Local Council Fails to Agree on Caneve Parking Project and Funding Deadline
Mayor and councilors are unable to reach an agreement on the construction of a megasized parking lot south of Caneve, between Sarca and the ring road: the proposal aims to secure the 5 billion provincial contribution, which has been waiting to be spent since 1992.
The positions within the council are incompatible, and in the meantime, the December 1 deadline imposed by the Province to commit to building the project has been missed. Mayor Veronesi was thus forced to ask Dellai for an extension, which will expire on the 20th. After that, everything might fall through.
The Race for Funds and Alternative Strategies
Securing, even at the last minute, the generous flow of funds, already reduced by 900 million due to delays, is obviously the main reason behind the unaccepted «relocation» of the megasized parking lot across Sarca, initially planned near the Foro Boario and then moved to viale delle Palme.
The Province has imposed such an urgent operational «pressing» that, given the limited time available, it is impossible to prepare a project for a multi-level underground parking lot for 300 cars. Technical documents must be submitted by July 1.
Alternative Solutions: Parking Lot and Connected Works
In seven months, the only viable solution is a parking lot of the same capacity, but on a flat area. For Sergio Dellanna, the deputy assessor who, along with Fabrizio Miori, proposed «cars at Caneve,» several other important reasons support this option.
For example, the 5 billion from the Province could also be spent on associated services. The 300 surface parking spaces will cost less than the entire contribution, and the remaining millions could be used to develop other projects.
The most significant and awaited is the cycle-pedestrian bridge over Sarca. The PRG (Urban Planning Regulation) even foresees two bridges in that area. The one further north, between Caneve and the vicinity of the via della Cinta parish, will be chosen.
Meanwhile, the option of crossing at the Pomerio Stadium remains just on paper for now. This choice would have the advantage of killing two birds with one stone, solving the longstanding issue of Caneve and Mogno residents, who want to reach the historic center avoiding the sea of cars.
At the same time, it would encourage people to leave their cars just a short drive from the city.
Assessments on Tourism Development and Parking
Regarding concerns about expanding parking spaces in viale delle Palme, Dellanna clarifies that in five years, it will be possible to assess the tourism potential of nearby casinos, the Armanni hospital, and the Quisisana sanatorium. Only then will it be possible to accurately gauge real parking needs.
