Lombardy and South Tyrol are working together to promote the development of a direct regional railway connection between Milan and Bolzano. The goal is to create an efficient, stable, environmentally friendly, and sustainable system that improves the quality of public mobility.

The statement of intent was signed today at Palazzo Lombardia, in the presence of the Lombardy governor, the regional councilor for Transport and Sustainable Mobility, and the provincial councilor for Mobility and Infrastructure of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano.

The Lombardy regional councilor for Transport and Sustainable Mobility explained that the main objective is to enhance the railway connections between Lombardy and South Tyrol in preparation for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. The collaboration will also bring benefits in terms of sustainable mobility, identifying common routes to promote intermodality and the development of projects for the management of railway infrastructure. In addition, policies will be implemented for the development and integration of regional and local public transport.

The councilor of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano commented that together with Lombardy, they aim to create a direct, efficient, stable, environmentally friendly, and sustainable regional railway connection between Bolzano and Milan. The Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics represent an important opportunity to improve the connections between the two cities.

Lombardy and South Tyrol will work together to develop an operational proposal for a possible Interregional/Regioexpress connection between Milan and Bolzano in public transport. Additionally, the two regions will collaborate in preparation for the 2026 Olympics, exchanging best practices in order to achieve a lasting advantage for their respective transport systems.
