Lombardy Extends Pesticide Exemption for Olive Farming in Key Regions Through 2026
Lombardy Region has renewed its pesticide exemption for olive cultivation through 2026, allowing controlled burning of pruning residues outside the usual October-March period. The measure aims to reduce pathogens and pests that overwinter in woody plant parts, especially in areas under Garda DOP and Laghi Lombardi designations, where several harmful organisms have been detected recently.
The regulation applies to olive-growing areas in Brescia, Bergamo, Como, and Lecco provinces, specifying that burning must be done in small piles following regional air quality standards. The decision, announced by regional officials Alessandro Beduschi and Giorgio Maione, targets pests including olive rust, canker diseases, and insect infestations.
