The Regional Council of Lombardy approved today draft Law No. 127, titled “Disposizioni per il riconoscimento della rilevanza sociale dell’obesità nella Regione Lombardia”. Promoted by Forza Italia, the measure is intended to recognize obesity as a chronic condition requiring an integrated approach spanning prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
The bill calls for the creation of a Regional Obesity Network, organized on a Hub & Spoke model. It also establishes a standing regional table on obesity, bringing together institutions, healthcare professionals, the academic world and patient associations to help ensure a structured system of care and follow-up.
The legislation further includes an annual allocation of one million euros to support people with severe obesity who are experiencing economic hardship, with the aim of preventing financial difficulties from becoming a barrier to accessing therapies. Regional Councillor Claudia Carzeri said the approval reflects Lombardy’s decision to address a major health emergency “in an organized way,” emphasizing prevention, structured care pathways and real patient support.
