Lonate Launches Volunteer Program for School Safety Assistance
Socially Useful Work. Under this section, the Lonate municipal administration’s initiative to renew the call (the previous one expired on May 18) for applications for minor assistance during school entry and exit is included.
The invitation is primarily directed at the elderly willing to dedicate part of their free time to this task, which is not overly burdensome but decidedly useful. How did the idea originate? “We received several reports,” explains the Education Department Assessor Alessandra Fontana, “from parents and school operators regarding the need to ensure safety for children when entering and leaving the school building.”
I’m referring to road safety. Currently, or rather, until the end of the school year, this task was performed by the Municipal Police. This meant the officers were diverted from other important duties that required their constant presence in the area.
“Thanks to new volunteers, selected and trained by the Municipality, this will no longer happen,” assures Fontana. “There is also the positive experience of nearby towns like Desenzano and Padenghe, which have introduced these helpful figures some time ago.”
Participation Methods and Training
As explained in the call by the head of the social policies department, the elderly volunteers will receive a fair hourly compensation. Their commitment will take place during the 2001-2002 school calendar, from Monday to Friday. Applications, complete with personal details and tax code, must be addressed to the mayor and received at the Protocol Office by July 20.
The application form can be collected at the Public Education Office. A preliminary interview with the candidates is planned. Those selected will then be invited to attend a specific training course on road rules, conducted by the municipal police.
In September, after the course and before the start, a test on traffic signage will be held in front of the schools. “Our invitation,” concludes Assessor Fontana, “is especially directed to the many elderly hoping to contribute daily to the Lonate community.”
With this call, we have also involved the Aurora Social Center, where many of them gather.”
