Lonato del Garda has been confirmed as the Lombard municipality with the highest land consumption in 2024, according to data recently released by Legambiente and ISPRA. Despite ongoing demographic decline, the phenomenon of land consumption has reached alarming levels, with a significant increase compared to the past. In Lombardy, 834.1 hectares of land were lost in the past year, contributing to a national trend that deviates from the European goal of “Zero Land Consumption.” The municipalities of Lonato del Garda, Bergamo, and Noviglio (MI) top the list of those most affected by this issue. Legambiente Lombardia’s spokesperson, Damiano Di Simine, emphasizes that despite the approval of a regional law aimed at curbing land consumption over eleven years ago, the results remain unsatisfactory. The growth of logistics facilities and data centers has not brought the expected benefits for abandoned areas; rather, it has favored the cementification of agricultural land. A change in land management is urgently needed to promote the recovery and reclamation of abandoned industrial spaces. Italian Version
