The Fondazione Ugo Da Como, together with the Ateneo Accademia di Scienze Lettere e Arti di Brescia and the Comune di Lonato del Garda, is organising a series of four public lectures at the Biblioteca civica in Lonato del Garda dedicated to Giuseppe Zanardelli (1826-1903), the Brescian statesman and jurist, two hundred years after his birth. The meetings will take place weekly on Saturdays from the end of September, with free entry.
The first lecture is scheduled for Saturday 26 September at 17:00 in the Sala del Consiglio at the Palazzo del Comune. Alessandro Bertoli, a lawyer and researcher who has studied Zanardelli for over 20 years, will discuss the statesman’s political work, including the electoral reform that expanded voting rights, the unified Criminal Code, the Commercial Code, the organisation of the judiciary, and social legislation on work for women and children. On Saturday 3 October at 17:00, Valerio Terraroli of the University of Verona will address architect Antonio Tagliaferri and the villa he built for Zanardelli in Maderno on Lake Garda between 1886 and 1892, described as combining Gothic, Liberty and Renaissance elements.
On 10 October at 17:00, Sergio Onger, president of the Ateneo di Brescia and formerly a professor of economic history, will speak about Zanardelli’s monumental Roman politics and its influence on the building of Rome Capitale between the 19th and 20th centuries. The series concludes on Saturday 17 October at 17:00 with Stefania Cretella of the University of Verona, who will examine Zanardelli’s role in creating civic monuments in Brescia and along the Gardasee shoreline, and how sculpture served as a tool for public commemoration. After each talk, visitors can take guided tours of the Casa Museo di Ugo Da Como (times 18:30-19:15, booking by the preceding Friday, €12) and then dine at TavolaMOS with a Zanardelli-themed buffet (€50 including visit and dinner, mandatory booking). Until 15 November, the Ateneo di Brescia in Palazzo Tosio is also hosting the exhibition Giuseppe Zanardelli (1826-1903).
