Today, Tuesday, August 26, Lonato witnessed the discovery of two World War II grenades at a construction site on Via Giovanni Paolo II. While working on the construction of a small villa, workers uncovered the two devices near the Karol Wojtyla kindergarten. The Carabinieri promptly intervened to secure the area, while bomb disposal experts from the Army arrived from Cremona, accompanied by an ambulance from the public rescue service in Calcinato and a medical car.
Specialists from the 10th Engineer Regiment identified the grenades as 76 mm (American) and 75 mm (Italian) artillery shells, both found to be empty and devoid of explosive material. The operation was completed swiftly without posing any risk to the public; the military also conducted a survey of the surrounding area, confirming the absence of any additional ordnance.
