Lorca Tribute at Scaliger Castle Highlights Love, Politics, and Tradition
“Set against the backdrop of the Scaliger Castle, the recited and sung verses of Federico Garcia Lorca will certainly mark a compelling closing of the summer season.” This is the conviction of Marileno Brentegani, president of the Pro loco, who announces tonight’s performance at 9 PM, organized in collaboration with the municipal administration and the library.
Themes and Style of the Performance
Along with “Lament for the Death of Ignacio,” one of the most famous poetic compositions in Spanish literature, the event will feature a series of pieces centered around themes of love, social and political commitment (Lorca was killed at the age of 38 by the Francoists precisely for his anti-fascist stance), and Spanish tradition.
The chosen expressive form mixes recited passages with those accompanied by guitar and with songs, drawing heavily from gypsy and flamenco sounds. The poetry resonates because it takes inspiration from life, especially its most violent contrasts (most notably that between love and death), and, while aiming to reconcile tradition and avant-garde, it places contradiction at the heart as the true “light of the poet.”
Performers and Performance
The pieces will be recited by Tiziano Gelmetti from Estravagario Teatro, accompanied by soprano Alessandra De Negri and classical guitarist Michela Cordioli, with the participation of actor Andrea di Clemente.
