Maderno Rings in the New Year with Festivities and a Safe New Year’s Swim

A rehearsal for the traditional New Year’s Day swim took place at Lido di Maderno on 27 December, with about a dozen participants entering water measured at 11.4°C and air temperature near 10°C as organisers prepare for the main event on 1 January. organisers expect around 150 people from across the province and abroad to meet at 10:00 on New Year’s Day and enter the water at 11:00.

The spontaneous event has no official organisation and participants enter the water at their own risk; organisers and regulars advise gradual entry and staying close to the shore for safety. After the swim the Trattoria Nonna Irene will offer free hot drinks on the beach, and the tradition continues to draw residents and tourists.
