Malcesine–Monte Baldo Cable Car Upgrade Presented to Garda Tour Operators
The new Malcesine – Monte Baldo cable car project, which is scheduled to replace the current system by June 2002, was presented today in Malcesine (Verona) to Garda tourism operators.
Project Description and Benefits
The construction of the new facility, already introduced last May, is, according to officials of the «Azienda Trasporti Funicolari Malcesine Monte Baldo» consortium — formed by the Provincia di Verona, Comune di Malcesine, and Camera di Commercio di Verona — an initiative that involves all stakeholders operating in the Garda basin.
The building of the structure, which covers a height difference of 1700 meters across two sections of 1500 and 2800 meters in length — is entrusted to Hoelzl di Lana (Bolzano) with an estimated cost of just under 36 billion lire. The managing company will finance it through a loan of 25 billion lire granted by the bank Opi spa of the San Paolo Imi group in Rome.
The works, which include accessibility improvements, will commence by September of this year.
Technical Features and Environmental Impact
The cable car will have an hourly capacity of 600 people, a figure that should triple the current traffic of approximately two hundred thousand travelers annually.
The system will be the first in Europe to feature rotating cabins, allowing travelers to enjoy panoramic views of the entire lake.
