Mantuan Landscape Exhibitions at Palazzo Todeschini and Galleria La Cornice

Two Mantuan exhibitions on landscapes characterize the scene around Lake Garda. At palazzo Todeschini (Galleria Civica), artworks by eight artists are exhibited on the dual theme of landscape and figure.

At Galleria La Cornice, the oil paintings by Sandro Negri are on display, exploring nature both in repose and landscape: “Silenzi” is the title of his recent work.

Among the artists of the informal, non-structured group present in palazzo Todeschini are well-known figures in the city such as Angelo Boni, who exhibited in the Aa a few years ago, and Franco Bassignani. Both focus on landscapes, with distinct characteristics that differentiate them.

Artists’ Characteristics and Themes

More attentive to truth, to detail—sometimes exaggerated—or infused with a sense of memory of the objects depicted, Angelo Boni is characterized by a highly effective narrative line. More focused on the chromatic rhythms of composition and the enchanted feel of the evocative dimension of real landscapes, Franco Bassignani operates within a compositional mode that merges real space and mental space to express the emotional truth of things.

Two dimensions, that of memory and that of evocative quality, as well as the adherence to truth and the emphasis on compositional rhythms—approaching informalism—also define the rest of the group of exhibiting friends.

Works of the Artist Collective from Upper Mantua

The works by artists from the artist collective of Upper Mantua display a progression toward figure representation, highlighting abstract accents and reflecting the ongoing conflict between extraction and emotion—one of the themes of the century we have just closed.

Exhibited are works by Giuseppe Botturi, Mario Calzoni, Augusto Morari, G. Piero Moretti, Stefano Nardi, and G. Carlo Zanini.

Negri’s “Silenzi” at the Zacchi Gallery

Just behind palazzo Todeschini, at the Zacchi gallery—run by father and son—in Piazza Malvezzi 45, are exhibited Negri’s Silenzi. A world of memories, almost a world of the last, gathered through dense painting where matter creates image.

Following the informal tradition, Negri remains on the threshold of plausible recognizability, from which he does not wish to depart.

It is a rural world composed of work and silence, values and enthusiasm that seem to belong to another era. It is the final image of a world soon to vanish—not only from life but also from our memory—along with the values inherently connected to it.

Duration of the Exhibitions

The exhibition at palazzo Todeschini closes on October 28; the one at Galleria La Cornice concludes on October 30.
