Monte Croce Hospital Introduces Painless Childbirth via Epidural in Italy
There is a new development in the Obstetrics department of the Monte Croce Hospital in Desenzano: it is now possible to give birth without pain thanks to a technique that was experimented with over half a century ago and is widespread in Anglo-Saxon countries, which allows for the elimination of pain caused by contractions during labor.
In Italy, however, it is only available in a few delivery rooms. Among these is the one in Desenzano, as explained by the head of the division, Pasquale Pignatelli. “This involves epidural analgesia, a technique that, through a minimally or entirely painless injection administered via the spinal column by an anesthesiologist, relieves the pain caused by labor contractions and allows women to experience the childbirth intensely, focusing on the emotions of such a unique moment.”
Details about the technique and team
“It should be noted that the medications injected,” continues Pignatelli, “do not modify the mother’s state of consciousness in any way, and allow her to move during labor, focus at the appropriate time, and do not affect the newborn in any manner.”
The painless childbirth is made possible thanks to the effort of the anesthesiology team led by Walter Iacovelli and the staff of the Obstetrics division. Expecting mothers can contact the hospital for clarification by calling 030-9145494 or 030-9145343.
Department activities and additional services
Returning to the Obstetrics division at Monte Croce, it should be noted that since the beginning of the «118» emergency service, the same department has been integrated into the Neonatal Pathology. “This means,” adds Pignatelli, “that we are authorized to care for infants from 32 weeks gestation onward.”
The pediatric medical emergency service is also active, providing a specialist available 24 hours a day for emergencies. This increases the safety threshold, providing an extra guarantee for future mothers.
