A specialized Monte Luppia Mountain Bike Rescue operation successfully evacuated a 52-year-old cyclist from South Tyrol following a severe fall along the rugged woodland trails overlooking the eastern shores of Lake Garda. The incident highlights the critical importance of emergency readiness and the rapid deployment capabilities of the regional Alpine Rescue service in challenging terrain.
Emergency Deployment on Monte Luppia
The accident occurred on the afternoon of Sunday, 27 September 2026, when a cyclist originally from Campo di Trens in the province of Bolzano lost control of his mountain bike while navigating a dirt track in the Monte Luppia forest accompanied by his wife. The Verona Alpine Rescue team (Soccorso Alpino di Verona) received the distress call and intervened promptly around 13:30, coordinating with the Verona Emergenza medical helicopter service to reach the remote wooded area.
Due to the difficult accessibility of the crash site, the emergency medical team and a technical rescue specialist were lowered directly to the scene using a mechanical winch, ensuring immediate trauma assessment and stabilization of the injured rider.
Airlift to Peschiera del Garda Hospital
The cyclist, who reported severe pain in his shoulder and back, was carefully immobilized onto a specialized mountain rescue stretcher before being winched aboard the hovering aircraft. He was subsequently airlifted directly to the specialized trauma unit at the Peschiera del Garda hospital for urgent medical evaluation and care.
Following the successful evacuation, the Alpine Rescue ground personnel escorted the man’s wife safely back to the trailhead and managed the recovery and transport of the mountain bikes from the forest path.
