Montichiari is at the center of an appeal launched by Legambiente, which warns of the risk of new landfills in the area following a proposed amendment to the Regional Waste Management Plan (PRGR) by the Lombardy Region. This amendment could undermine the protection established in 2014 that prevents the creation of new waste disposal facilities in the region. Legambiente has emphasized that the “volumetric pressure index,” introduced to safeguard already overloaded areas, could be rendered ineffective, thereby allowing the construction of landfills near contaminated sites.
The local Legambiente chapter has urged institutional representatives, including Mayor Togni, who is now a Provincial Councilor with a mandate for the Environment, to intervene and amend this proposal in the PRGR. Furthermore, the association “Basta Veleni” has pointed out that the province of Brescia is already a significant hub for the disposal of special waste in Lombardy, housing 12 of the 23 regional landfills. For this reason, a moratorium has been requested to prevent additional burdens on a territory deemed saturated. Legambiente has also called on neighboring municipalities such as Calcinato and Bedizzole to join the fight against this regulatory change.
