MosaicoScienze 2000: Scientific Debates and Activities on Garda Hills
MosaicoScienze 2000, the science-focused event, is nearing its opening; it will take place from September 22 to 24, 2000, on the morainic hills of Garda. The event is promoted by the Associazione turistica delle colline moreniche del Garda (Tourist Association of the Garda Morainic Hills), in collaboration with: the Provincia di Mantova (Province of Mantova, Departments of Tourism and Culture); the Regione Lombardia (Lombardy Region, Department of Tourism and Production Activities); the Azienda di Promozione Turistica del Mantovano (Mantovano Tourism Promotion Agency); the Comunità del Garda (Garda Community); and the magazine NEWTON, Lo Spettacolo della scienza (Newton, The Show of Science). It is endorsed by the Ministero per i Beni e le Attività culturali (Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities).
Program and Themes
The schedule for the MosaicoScienze Events, the main itinerary of the event, has now been finalized. Esteemed and well-known guests for a wide audience have confirmed their participation.
MosaicoScienze 2000 thus positions itself as a reputable reference point for those eager to “learn more,” to get closer to the scientific world without necessarily being professionals in the field.
Centered around the theme of Body, various interventions will revolve around this topic. The subjects will be diverse and approached from different perspectives, sometimes divergent, sometimes entirely opposite, aiming (as everyone hopes) to create a lively debate that includes the “common people.” Over the three days, visitors will have the chance to reflect, become curious, and be amazed.
Discussions by Famous Scientists and Debates
The Nobel laureate Rita Levi Montalcini will inaugurate the entire event; Massimo Polidoro will examine several pseudo-scientific phenomena (levitation, telepathy, etc.) that involve the body and its supposed capabilities, to help differentiate science from numerous deceptions.
Roberto Vacca will analyze current, future, and possible scenarios affecting not only the body but also the surrounding world; Alberto Oliverio will explain the functioning of the brain, which remains the most unknown part of the body to date; and Giorgio Brunelli will give an update on his ongoing research for years against spinal cord injuries.
Gian Paolo Guerra and Angelo Cordioli will discuss, from professional and personal experience respectively, the topic of heart transplants.
Discussion Topics and Key Moments
Among the main highlights are two debates focused on particularly debated issues: Federchimica (Federchimica, Italian Chemical Federation) and the Confederazione degli Agricoltori Italiani (Confederation of Italian Farmers) will “clash” over the problem of genetically modified foods, while Giuseppe Novelli and Deputy Carlo Casini will discuss, from opposing positions, the topic of cloning.
Franco Malerba, the first Italian astronaut in space, will illustrate the challenges facing the human body in space; sports doctor Nicola Sponsiello, together with extreme sports champions De Stefani and Battaglia, will address the limits and possibilities of the body in sports.
Other Activities and Information
The other Event Itineraries (Environment, Food & Wine, Culture, Sports) will complement the main program, forming a multitude of offers stemming from the numerous resources of the territory — the Garda morainic hills, rich in attractions and opportunities.
Activities range from cycling routes to tastings of local products; from sculpture to music and theater; from tambourine playing to massages.
