Municipal considers parking expansion at ex Carmellini for residents and businesses

What does the municipal administration think about doubling the number of parking spaces in the ex Carmellini area (by constructing a second level at street level) to sell around one hundred (but possibly many more) to residents, hoteliers, and shopkeepers in the historic center?

The question comes from a spontaneous committee led by the hairdresser-sailor Gianni Righetti. A month ago, during a meeting with some councillors of Mayor Veronesi’s team, he casually suggested the idea, and the next day he and others began polling residents in the city center to see if they were interested in solving the increasingly serious parking problem.

Of course, with relatively modest expenses: for this reason, the underground silo proposal at Foro Boario was quickly discarded in favor of offering potential buyers a less burdensome solution. The plan for the ex Carmellini area, precisely, had already been studied about ten years ago on behalf of Assocentro by architect Sandro Campetti.

Back then, it was concluded that elevation would involve an expenditure of 300-400 million lire. During the same meeting, Righetti handed over to municipal representatives over a thousand signatures from residents opposed to paid parking at Foro Boario and the Casinò.

Righetti and his friends are still awaiting a final response. It’s understandable that downtown residents have shown incredible patience (the parking issue has been ongoing for years), but this patience is now nearly exhausted.

Furthermore, Righetti emphasizes that the Municipality should take advantage of the willingness expressed by about a hundred surveyed individuals to purchase a parking space.

Moreover, after learning about the initiative, many others have contacted them to “reserve” a spot. Today, the number has reached around 200, meaning that if the municipal administration decided to proceed with the project, the cost of the work would almost be entirely covered by the sale of the parking spaces.
