Nago-Torbole’s Feasible Short Tunnel Solution for Traffic Relief
“To those who ask me which is the best solution, the long tunnel or the short one, I respond ‘the feasible one’.” In a statement, Mayor Parolari of Nago-Torbole states that “the only feasible solution” is the short tunnel because it does not encounter significant technical, environmental, political, economic, safety, or permitting obstacles, and because it has already been financed and included in the provincial plan.
The debate over the long tunnel
“The long tunnel, on the other hand,” explains Parolari, “besides facing all these obstacles—some of which are probably insurmountable—has not even been considered in the provincial plan, and discussions about it will be in the future. Not to mention that, as it would need to be constructed, the long tunnel would effectively create an additional stretch of highway between the Adige River and Garda: only the Mori-Loppio segment would be missing to complete the highway link and transform the Alto Garda from a tourist arrival area into a transit zone for traffic from Brescia.”
Traffic problems in Nago-Torbole
“Regarding Nago-Torbole specifically,” he continues, “every day a flood of light and heavy vehicles passes through the two towns, sapping the area’s breath and increasingly affecting quality of life. With the new access portal to Alto Garda, all heavy traffic and much of the through light traffic will be eliminated: it is therefore a gateway that, with proper attention to avoid creating new problems for the Nago area and the Oltresarca of Arco, should be opened immediately.”
Proposals to improve traffic flow
“If a light metro connecting, via the Adige-Garda tunnel, the stations of Rovereto and Torbole is added, and from there, through the new Torbole bypass, connections made to Riva, Arco, and, via buses, to Malcesine, we will have solved traffic issues for decades.”
