Boating Accident in Salò: Sentences for Two German Tourists Confirmed. The Court of Cassation has upheld the sentences for Patrick Kassen and Christian Teismann, involved in the tragic incident that occurred on the night of June 19-20, 2021, which resulted in the deaths of Greta Nedrotti and Umberto Garzarella, who were struck by their vessel. Kassen, who was at the helm of the Riva speedboat and found to be under the influence of alcohol, has been sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison, while Teismann, the owner of the boat, received a sentence of 2 years and 11 months. Both were absent from the courtroom during the ruling.
The Cassation Court accepted the prosecutor’s request regarding the imposed sentences but annulled the confiscation of the Riva speedboat, which will be re-evaluated by the Court of Appeal in Brescia. Key elements for the confirmation of the sentence included video footage showing Kassen in an altered state and testimonies concerning the consumption of alcohol by the two tourists prior to the incident. The prosecutor emphasized that Teismann was aware of Kassen’s condition, which was deemed incompatible with the safe operation of the vessel.
