New Roundabout Construction at Aldo Moro Parking Boosts Lake Town Traffic Safety
Work has begun a few days ago on the construction of a roundabout at the Aldo Moro parking lot, at the intersection of Gardesana, Via Croce, and Borgo Cavour. The new traffic layout is part of the Urban Traffic Plan (Put) drafted by the Turin architect Bruno Gandino, which already led last year to the construction of the much-discussed and criticized roundabouts in Lazise and Garda.
Details of the intervention and future projects
The investment for the construction of the new “island” amounts to approximately 220 million lira, with work expected to be completed by the end of the year. In the early months of 2002, a second mini roundabout will be built in the Ca’ Nova area, opposite the new Health District and the fire station, which are still awaiting commissioning despite the two buildings being ready for over a year.
Projects and decisions by the mayor
The use of the conditional is necessary, as Mayor Armando Ferrari has not hidden his intention to prioritize the construction of a roundabout just before the San Severo church for those coming from Garda. This is, in fact, an extremely chaotic and heavily trafficked junction during high summer and spring weekends, due to the access to Gardesana highway that vehicles coming from the side roads of Via Europa Unita and Via Foscolo use.
Advantages and context of the modifications
The new project would allow the traffic to flow more smoothly in all directions and avoid standstill queues. It is worth remembering that Bardolino, along with Lazise and Garda, was forced to adopt the Urban Traffic Plan following regional resolution number 3111 of July 6, 1993, issued after the enactment of the new Road Traffic Code. Essentially, the legislator’s aim is to slow down traffic and thus make circulation safer in these densely frequented centers.
Impact on the lakeside towns
This is the case of the three lakeside settlements split in two by Gardesana road. Undoubtedly, as demonstrated by the new road layout in Garda and Lazise, vehicle speeds have been drastically reduced, much to everyone’s satisfaction. The only price to pay for increased pedestrian safety are long and exhausting summer traffic jams.
