No Traffic Changes: Mayor Sigurtà Rejects Street Reversal Proposals
No recent developments are expected for traffic: Mayor Arturo Sigurtà has decided not to make any changes to the one-way streets on Caraffe and San Pietro streets.
The shopkeepers on the latter street had requested to reverse the two mandatory directions: the proposal was to allow traffic on via Caraffe from the traffic light at Viale Boschetti toward Crocetta, and on via San Pietro from that intersection toward via Lonato.
Opinions and Consultation Methods
“The shopkeepers made some arguments, but before making a decision, I felt it was right to gauge the opinions of my fellow citizens,” explains Sigurtà.
Therefore, through the media, I asked all drivers for their opinions, to implement changes based on informed reasons.
Unfortunately, I received only three responses: two requesting to keep things as they are, and one in favor of the reversal.”
Final Decision and Motivations
Since it is evident that those one-way streets do not pose a problem for traffic flow, Sigurtà has decided not to entertain the shopkeepers’ requests on via San Pietro.
“For now — confirms Sigurtà — since I personally believe the current solution is better, I do not intend to change the circulation in those two streets.”
Past Criticisms and Controversies
The intervention advocated by the group of shopkeepers would probably have led to a modification of the Crocetta intersection, one of the most contested aspects of last year’s traffic plan: what caused discontent was the no-right-turn restriction at the end of via IV Novembre for traffic coming from the north, where a school complex, a sports center, and the populous I Maggio quarter are concentrated.
