Nuvolari’s Vanderbilt Cup on Display in Mantua for ACI’s Centennial
The Vanderbilt Cup, won by Tazio Nuvolari on October 12, 1936 at Roosevelt Raceway in New York, was displayed at Palazzo Te in Mantua on June 3 as part of the Centenario di ACI Mantova celebrations. The ceremony was attended by ACI Italia president Geronimo La Russa, Palazzo Te Foundation president Giovanni Pasetti, motor-sport historian Gianni Cancellieri, Museo Nicolis president Silvia Nicolis, and ACI Mantova president Alberto Marenghi.
The trophy stands 70 cm tall, is made of solid silver, and weighs about 70 kg. It was crafted by Cartier for George Vanderbilt and returned to Italy thanks to Luciano Nicolis, who coordinated its repatriation from the United States. The exhibition, linked to the show Lo sguardo di Nuvolari with projected photographs at the Fruttiere of Palazzo Te, runs from June 3 to June 7 and features documents including the famous image of Nuvolari inside the trophy toasting with a magnum of champagne.
