Parents Demand Action Over Electromagnetic Risks Near Schools

Concerns over electromagnetic waves and children’s safety

The warning of investigation issued to Enel President Chicco Testa, who is under investigation by prosecutor Guariniello of Turin for the electromagnetic waves emitted by dozens of high-voltage power lines, especially near nurseries and schools, has rekindled parents’ worries at the Belvedere elementary school.

The presence of a high-voltage line, which crosses the school’s garden, had raised alarm and concerns over children’s health as early as last year.

The mayor, through a communication posted on the school noticeboard, announced that Enel, when contacted, confirmed that the line was not under its jurisdiction, as it is managed by another company, which the municipal administration referred to for clarifications.

A meeting between representatives of this company and the mayor was scheduled for the end of January, but no further information has been available since.

Now, parents are inclined to request the administration to assess the actual danger posed by the electric fields produced by the power line and to take appropriate measures to safeguard the health of children and staff at the school.

Electrosmog legislation and parents’ demands

The law on electrosmog, approved last February 16, provides ten years for bringing existing installations up to standard: a real contradiction, some say, if the danger of the high-voltage line at Belvedere is confirmed.

Raffaella Bolzoni, a parent representative, states she is overseeing the submission of requests: “The danger posed by electromagnetic fields, linked to the development of leukemias and tumors, as highlighted by many scientific studies, concerns us greatly.

Today, we will deliver to the principal of the Istituto Comprensivo 1, the mayor, and the education councilor a letter signed by all ten parent representatives from Belvedere, asking for urgent intervention to verify the actual danger of the line managed by Montedison.”

We hope for a prompt response from the relevant authorities.”
