The situation regarding the Provincial Road 9 (SP9) in Gargnano has seen significant developments following the landslides that occurred between September 8 and 9, caused by adverse weather conditions. According to a statement from the Province of Brescia, comprehensive investigations have been initiated to assess the stability of the compromised roadway.
Ongoing Technical Investigations
Following the two main landslides, located at kilometer 13+000 and kilometer 12+200, along with several minor slips, various surveys have been conducted. Recently, seismic investigations and penetrometric tests were carried out. A detailed technical survey is scheduled for today, while additional drilling will take place on Wednesday and Thursday to complete the geological analyses. The overall results of the investigations are expected to be available early next week.
Intervention Options
Local authorities are considering two possible intervention strategies for the road’s restoration. The first option involves restoring the roadway in its current position by reconstructing the slope that has suffered collapses. The second option contemplates widening the road uphill.
Partial Reopening of the Road Section
Thanks to recent maintenance work, which included clearing mud and debris as well as removing fallen trees from the roadway, a short section of SP9 has been reopened to vehicular traffic. This segment allows passage from kilometer 13+550 (near Casello Vecchio) to kilometer 19+000, also facilitating access for personnel monitoring the Valvestino dam.
Closure of Critical Sections
Despite the partial reopening, the segment from the Verzellina area (km 9+500) to Casello Vecchio (km 13+550) remains closed to traffic. This decision was made due to the presence of significant landslides and collapses on the roadway. It is crucial that all users—including pedestrians and cyclists—carefully follow the instructions provided by the authorities to ensure safety during this delicate period.
