The Rowing Palio of Peschiera, set to take place on May 31, marks a critical moment for local tradition, with a historic low of registered crews: only eight male and three female teams. This tournament, now in its 57th edition, has ancient origins dating back to 1548, when the first bisse began to navigate the waters in honor of the “Clarissimus Provvisore” of the Republic of Venice, Stefano Tiepolo. The official presentation of the championship was held in Lazise and highlighted how the pandemic has negatively impacted participation, alongside tensions between rowing clubs.
In an effort to revitalize the event, four types of races have been scheduled for Saturday evening. The calendar includes a series of regattas on various courses leading up to the final on August 2 in Cassone di Malcesine. Among the participants are the holders of the Lake Flag and several historic boats such as Clusanina and Bengi from Paratico. The competitions are expected to be competitive, but with reduced participation compared to previous years, a concerning sign for the future of rowing tradition in the area.
