From November 10 to 20, the Craffonara Civic Gallery in Riva del Garda will host the photographic exhibition titled “Gardumo 77.78-17.18”. The inauguration is scheduled for Saturday, November 9, at 5 PM.

A Journey Through Time via Images

This exhibition is inspired by the writings of the Triestine geographer Alessandro Cucagna, who between November 1977 and the following year undertook several excursions in the Gresta Valley. During these explorations, Cucagna recorded observations that he later elaborated into a more comprehensive text, now compiled by Gianmario Baldi and published by the Civic Museum of Rovereto under the title “The Gresta Valley as Described by Alessandro Cucagna (1915-1985)”.

Cucagna’s notes not only reflect his passion for the landscape but also highlight the significance of geology, spontaneous vegetation, and human impact on the territory, especially concerning mountain agriculture. The geographer was known for his ability to interpret places through a combination of direct knowledge and local testimonies.

The Contemporary Vision of Guido Benedetti

Guido Benedetti, an engineer specializing in urban planning and a landscape photographer, rediscovered Cucagna’s writings in the summer of 2017. His words guided him on a journey through the valley, allowing him to observe familiar places with new eyes. “I thus ‘(re)discovered’ the Gresta Valley,” Benedetti states, emphasizing how this experience led him to explore the same paths described by Cucagna nearly forty years later.

Benedetti’s research consists of 40 color images, printed using fine art techniques, that capture the essence of the valley spanning the municipalities of Mori and Ronzo-Chienis. The photographs are accompanied by texts drawn from the original works of the Triestine geographer.

Details about the Exhibition

The exhibition “Gardumo 77.78-17.18: A Narrative in 40 Images 40 Years After the Writings of Alessandro Cucagna” is organized by the association Il fotogramma in collaboration with the Municipality of Riva del Garda and is sponsored by the Vallagaria Community and the involved municipalities.

The exhibition will be open to the public every day from 9 AM to 7 PM, with free admission for all those interested in discovering this fascinating dialogue between past and present through contemporary photographic lens.
