Yesterday, April 28, 2024, the Pontiff visited the Vatican Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. During the event, he recalled the historic meeting on May 7, 1964 in the Sistine Chapel, where Pope Paul VI outlined the basis for an “authentic alliance” between the Church and contemporary artists.

Today, I would like to draw your attention to the exhibition “Lapilli” by Sara Munari, held at the Paolo VI Collections for Contemporary Art. Curated by M. Paderni and A. Franchi, this exhibition is the result of Munari’s victory in the 4th edition of the Paolo VI Prize for Contemporary Art in 2023.

The exhibition explores the theme of volcanic eruptions and their impact on religion and humanity. Through a mix of photographs, fabrics, and other materials, Munari reflects on the power of nature and its consequences on affected communities.

From 2019 to 2023, Munari traveled across Europe visiting volcanic regions to gather materials that she then transformed into visual narratives. These stories range from ancient myths to scientific documentation on the devastating force of volcanoes.

Munari delves into how volcanoes have influenced not only the physical landscape but also the spiritual beliefs of populations. For example, in Greek and Roman cultures, they were considered divine manifestations, while in Christianity, they could be seen as the work of Satan or divine signs.

“Lapilli” will be open until June 15, 2024, at the Paolo VI Collections for Contemporary Art. Opening hours are from Tuesday to Friday from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, and on Saturdays from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

Sara Munari was born in Milan in 1972 and is a professional photographer with a degree from Isfav in Padua. She founded La Stazione Fotografica and teaches at various Italian institutions, in addition to being the author of theoretical books on photography.

This museum houses a vast artistic heritage related to Giovanni Battista Montini (Pope Paul VI), showcasing significant works of European art from the 20th century, including works by Chagall, Picasso, and many other great artists.
