The ruins of the Garde paper mill, located in Toscolano Maderno, have recently been cleared of the brambles and vegetation that had enveloped them over the years. The announcement was made by the local administration, which emphasized the importance of preserving this historical heritage. This intervention represents the first step towards a recovery and musealization project aimed at making the site accessible to visitors and promoting local history. Mayor Chiara Chimini stated that a plan will be drafted to be presented for future funding opportunities, with the goal of transforming the paper mill into a gateway to the community’s history.
The Garde paper mill, which operated until 1959, is one of the most significant symbols of the Valley of the Paper Mills and dates back to 1521, when it belonged to the Belloni family. With its three original water wheels, it represents an important piece of Italian paper industry history. The current building retains historical architectural elements dating back to the 19th century and is set to become a cultural point of interest thanks to the municipality’s efforts for its recovery and enhancement.
