The mayor of Riva del Garda, Alessio Zanoni, has issued an ordinance establishing a ban on access to the beach of the local reserve of Val Gola for the summer of 2025 as well. This measure, effective until October 30, aims to protect the alborella, a fish from the Cyprinidae family whose population has been in sharp decline for decades, making it no longer subject to fishing. The causes of this decline include the destruction of breeding habitats and excessive human encroachment along the banks.
The local reserve of Val Gola, created in 2010 and located on the border with Lombardy, spans approximately 20,000 square meters and is essential for providing a protected environment where the alborella and other fish can reproduce. To further limit human impact on the already reduced population of alborella, the municipality has renewed the ban on beach access and is also planning a trial for the reintroduction of alborella into the reserve. Violating the ordinance will result in administrative fines ranging from 50 to 300 euros.
