Riva del Garda and sustainable tourism: analysis of social well-being

Recent developments in Riva del Garda have highlighted the increasing commitment to sustainable tourism and the improvement of the social well-being of residents. During the fifth edition of the event “Why Tourism,” held on December 11 at the Palazzo dei Congressi, the results of a study conducted by APT Garda Dolomiti on the social impact of tourism were presented. The meeting saw the participation of key figures such as local mayors, university experts, and community representatives, who discussed the challenges of balancing economic development with the quality of life for residents. The data show that in 2023, tourism generated 673 million euros and created over 5,700 jobs, but also highlighted critical issues related to peak season periods, such as mobility and overcrowding. The research revealed an average resident satisfaction score of 5.85 out of 10, which drops to 4.90 during the summer months. This decline is primarily attributed to the increased discomfort perceived by day visitors compared to overnight guests. In response to these issues, APT is promoting an integrated approach to tourism management, actively involving municipalities to address crucial matters such as mobility and local livability. Additionally, new facilities certified according to GSTC standards have been announced to ensure sustainable practices within the destination. The future of tourism in Trentino Garda will depend on the ability of all stakeholders to work together to find a balance between economic opportunities and the well-being of local communities.
