Riva del Garda celebrated the 79th anniversary of Liberation with a particularly well-attended ceremony, organized in collaboration with ANPI (National Association of Italian Partisans). The day of April 25th is a symbol of the military and political resistance of the partisan forces during World War II against the fascist government and Nazi occupation. The ceremony followed the usual program, with the laying of a laurel wreath at the Memorial for the Fallen of the Liberation under the arches of the town hall. The mayor and the president of ANPI’s Alto Garda and Ledro section, as well as representatives from local institutions, the National Alpine Association, the local police, and law enforcement agencies, were in attendance. During the speeches, the fundamental values of the Resistance were remembered, and the importance of keeping the memory of those dramatic years alive was emphasized. The mayor stressed the importance of knowing and disseminating history so as not to forget those who fought for the ideals and values that we often take for granted today. It was also highlighted that it is necessary to fight all forms of violence, including gender-based violence, so that the sacrifices of the partisans are not in vain. The president of ANPI drew attention to the fact that democracies are always under attack from thoughts and ideologies that seek to manipulate them to their own liking. He invited everyone to be sentinels in defense of constitutional values and not to trade freedom for a promise of security. During the ceremony, the text of the speech that Antonio Scurati had prepared for the television program “Che sarà” was also read, even though the program was canceled. This reading emphasized the importance of involving young people in the knowledge of recent history and fighting any form of censorship and restriction of freedom of expression. The day ended with a message of hope for a world without borders, based on anti-fascism and equality among peoples.
