This morning, the 46th International Dioxin Symposium opened at the Centro Congressi in Riva del Garda, described as the leading international symposium on dioxins. The event brings together nearly 700 leading international experts and researchers working on persistent organic pollutants, and will run for five days as a forum for presenting and sharing the latest research in the field. The symposium returns to Italy after ten years, following a partnership between Eco Research, a research centre based in Bolzano specialising in chemical analysis, and Riva del Garda Fierecongressi.
Riva del Garda has a long-standing link to dioxin research. In 1977, one year after the Seveso disaster, researcher Kees Olie of the University of Amsterdam presented at the Centro Congressi a report on the presence of dioxins in the dust from municipal waste incinerator filter systems. The symposium is led scientifically by Dr Werner Tirler, director of Eco Research, who said he is pleased to welcome the international scientific community to Riva del Garda. Congress Manager Renata Farina of Riva del Garda Fierecongressi added that choosing the venue for a major international scientific appointment is an honour and recognition for Italy’s scientific community.
Alongside Dioxin2026, the Centro Congressi is also hosting the International Symposium on Flame Retardants (BFR), focused on flame retardants and emerging contaminants. The parallel event is integrated with the dioxin symposium and will bring together experts and researchers to discuss recent findings on analysis, emissions, degradation, toxicology and regulatory aspects. Riva del Garda Fierecongressi also outlined an autumn programme featuring events including Miss Julie (22-23 September), the AOGOI Veneto – Friuli Venezia Giulia – Trentino Regional Congress (9-10 October), the 11th National SIPMeL Congress (25-28 October), and multiple additional meetings and festivals through December, including MusicaRiva on 20 and 23 December.
